Decarburisation
The loss of carbon from the surface of steel as a result of heating in a carbon weak atmosphere. During the rolling of steel hot surfaces are exposed to the decarburising effects of oxygen in the atmosphere and as a result the surface is depleted of carbon. In steels where the components are to be subsequently heat treated it is necessary to remove the decarburised surface by machining.

AISI (American Iron and Steel Institute)
An association of North American companies that mine iron ore and produce steel products. There are 31 member companies and 118 associate members, which include both suppliers and customers that distribute, process, or consume steel. The AISI represents

AISI Steels
Steels of the American Iron and Steel Institute. Common and alloy steels have been numbered in a system essentially the same as the SAE. The AISI system is more elaborate than the SAE in that all numbers are preceded by letters: A represents basic open-hearth alloy steel, B acid Bessemer carbon steel, C basic open-hearth carbon steel, CB either acid Bessemer ar basic open-hearth carbon steel, E electric furnace alloy steel.

Abrasion-Resistant Steels
A family of steel products developed for those applications involved in sliding and/or impact abrasion.

Acid Steel(2)
Steel produced in a furnace with an acid lining, i.e. consisting of a siliceous refractory and under a siliceous lag. With and acid slag, carbon, silicon and manganese sulphur and phosphorus in percentages exceeding those permissible for the specification being made. Most steel manufactured today is in furnaces with basic linings.
